Sport inserts are extremely functional and play many roles! They can be of standard fare like football, baseball, or track. Inserts are sewn using an embroidery stitch, offer a wide selection of colors and styles and are sewn on top of the chenille in most cases or sewn in a more traditional manner where the chenille has been sewn around the insert.
Service bars are used in conjunction with a sports insert to show the number of years in that endeavor and are most often used on a letterman jacket or letterman sweater letter. Service bars are usually only two colors - material that matches the primary letter color and the bar color matching the accent color. Service bars can be created in individual bars so that they be added one year at a time or they can also be sewn as a set of 2, 3. or 4 in cases where a school letter is being recreated or decorating the letter has been delayed.
Sport inserts also play an important role when creating chenille sleeve patches. In this case, a trumpet insert was added to an otherwise simple round patch that allowed the patch to have more character than just text - it added some life to the letterman patch.

Generally, inserts are two colors; that of the item being sewn on for the base material and the contrast color. More complicated inserts such as wrestling or swimming can be sequenced to add additional color and details, so the design looks more lifelike or representative of school colors.
A third option for inserts can be a mini version of a mascot or organization symbolic representation.
